MORE ABOUT CANNES ...

carre Over the years, Cannes has become one of the most praised tourist destinations. Of course Cannes has partly become renowned because of its celebrated festival, which carries the same name: the Cannes festival.
The town's reputation, the same as that of St-Tropez, is overrated and by mentioning Cannes' name magical pictures come to one's mind: luxurious hotels, casinos, the "Croisette", stars and the film festival, big cars, and a dream life.

French courses Cannescarre The birth of the city took place 200 BC with the Ligurean tribe of Oxybiens, which settled on the Suquet hill. The Romans dislodged them from there to be able to found Canoïs.
Hypothesis of the origin of Cannes' name: There are 2 possibilities. It derived from the word "reed" because of its connection of reeds in the surrounding marshes. The most probable hypothesis is the following. It originates from the Indo-European word " kan " signifying "height" and "peak" and after all Cannes had been founded on the Suquet hill.
5th century: Monk Honorat moved to the island where he founded the abbey that still carries his name today.

carre From the 10th to the 14th century: Development of the "cannois" housing conditions.

language school Cannescarre Some information on the Cannes festival. The Cannes Festival is the most prestigious festival of its kind around the world. The preparations for the first Cannes festival took place in 1939 when a group of French discussed their ideas and their intentions of organising a festival thwart the Biennale of Venice.
We then had to wait 7 years for the festival's first edition to take place on September 19th 1946.
One had to wait until 1955 to see the presentation of the first " Palme d'Or " (Golden palm-tree). By the way, after years of dismissal, this festival became more than just a promotional tool. Nowadays it is an extraordinary spectacle with a lot of magical elements. For millions, indeed billions of cinema fanatics, the Cannes festival is the main event of the year. For them it represents a kind of dream
