MORE ABOUT GRASSE ...
A visit to Grasse can be put down to 2 major poles that have to be associated with it: A visit to the historic town and a visit to different museums (of which all relate to perfumes).
Grasse is the world capitol of perfume whose different perfume shops are well known around the whole world.
Grasse's history goes back to prehistoric times and its' site was already populated back then. The town dates back to the 7th century. Concerning the origin of its' name, there are many possibilities. The name comes from its' land and soil " grasse " (fat/greasy) allowing flowers to be grown. Another possibility is a derivation from, Grassus, a rich landlord's name. The last and most probable possibility: deriving from the Latin name of the hill of tuff on which the town settled and developed, " podium grassum " or " grossum " hence Grassa .
It is also renowned for its' asthma healing climate.
A few words about the history. In the 12th century, the republic of Grasse was run by " consuls through the grace of god ". The city maintains connections with Pisa and Genoa. The trade also started flourishing and the cities makes business and trades with each other. Grasse exports soap, oil and skins from the tanneries and imports fresh animal skins and weapons.
A few words about the development of Grasse's perfumeries. Grasse specialised in leather and silverware for a long time. In the beginning the perfume was imported, then, because of its growing importance, one started fabricating it in Grasse.
