400.000 years ago elephant hunters who were the first inhabitants of Nice, settle on the site of Terra-Amata.
300 BC, the Massaliots founded NIKAIA - trading market on the sea front.
13 BC , the Romans built a second city, CEMENELUM , next to NIKAIA , on the hills of Cimiez. Then, in the fifth century , CEMENELUM was abandoned to the advantage of NIKAÏA. The Saracens devastated the city in 813 , and extended their authority on all Western Provence, called the Moorish Coast.
In 1388 , on the death of Queen Jeanne, Nice integrated the county of Savoy and became a true fortress, the centre piece of the defence plans of the Counts of Savoy against the French and their allies.
In 1543 , the Turkish fleet is repelled, thanks to the courage of the people of Nice, symbolised by Catherine SEGURANE.
The department of the Alpes Maritimes was created in 1793, after a period of inavasion. NICE and its region was to become a part of France in 1860. Nice and its region then became the Côte d'Azur.
